Motherland
...the place of our birth and growing. Whether the place is Canada or not, we all have a special attachment to these lands. And however much we deny our roots, it inevitably helps to define who we are as human beings. As such our motherlands are part of the definition of "self".

As a citizen of Japan, I have lived more years in Canada than I have in Japan. But, I am still essentially Japanese. My mannerisms, my thought patterns, my taste buds...are all suited for life in Japan. Yet I cannot deny the fact that Canada has also shaped who I am. Neither fully Japanese nor Canadian, I am a bi-product of multiculturalism.

The selected images are souvenirs I brought back from the motherland, partly for myself, but also for those like me leading bicultural lives. They are meant to highlight the beauty of my motherland, but also to inspire the viewer to explore their own motherlands. And eventually branch out to explore other people's motherlands to understand, accept and embrace these different lands.
